12th Annual Light the Night for Sight Walkathon
A Fun, Successful Event for Fort Worth!
The 12th Annual Light the Night for Sight Walkathon was held Saturday, June 20 on Alcon's corporate campus in Fort Worth, raising more than $143,000 to support the sight-saving programs of Prevent Blindness Texas. The theme for the evening was all about learning to protect your eyes and preserve your sight, particularly during summer celebrations. Thousands of injuries occur every year as a result of consumer fireworks, with approximately half of those involving eye injuries.
More than 1,500 participants were registered to attend. Activities included an amazing classic car show with 50 entries, public safety exibits provided by the Fort Worth Police, CareFlight, MedStar and the Everman Fire Department. Children enjoyed the "critters" from the Fort Worth Nature Center, various kids games, sidewalk chalk zone, 2 trackless trains, a giant slide, clowns, stiltwalkers, Looney Tunes characters from Six Flags, Dodger from the Fort Worth Cats Baseball Club, Safety Bear, and special guests Alcon's TearGlyde and Patty Patanol mascots. Free adult vision screenings were provided by Prevent Blindness Texas, Alcon employee volunteers and staff from Lenscrafters. Two bands, The Alcon Jazz Ensemble and The Time Bandits - both made up of Alcon employees - performed while attendees enjoyed free hot dogs, ice cream, fresh fruit, snack cakes, sodas and plenty of bottled water. The evening was capped off by a spectacular fireworks display, reminding everyone to leave the fireworks to the professionals.
A heartfelt thanks to all of our wonderful event sponsors, particularly our host, Alcon, and all the wonderful Alcon employees who volunteered their time to make Light the Night for Sight happen! Through your support, Prevent Blindness Texas will continue to provide the sight-saving programs in our community. See you next year!
